Connect Codex
Configure Codex with the private Studio MCP URL and a bearer credential held in a local environment variable.
Use the private Studio MCP endpoint from Settings → Connections. Select Codex, choose the required access and create a credential. Save it from Save this credential now. The setup snippet contains an environment-variable name, not the credential itself.
Configure the server
Merge the following entry into ~/.codex/config.toml, replacing the example URL with the exact URL shown in Studio:
[mcp_servers.voxelsite]
url = "https://example.com/_studio/mcp.php"
bearer_token_env_var = "VOXELSITE_MCP_TOKEN"
Use a different server name if voxelsite already identifies another installation. Codex reads bearer_token_env_var as the name of the variable containing the bearer credential. See OpenAI’s MCP configuration guide.
Load the credential locally
In a Bash or Zsh terminal, run:
printf 'Credential: '
IFS= read -r -s VOXELSITE_MCP_TOKEN
printf '\n'
export VOXELSITE_MCP_TOKEN
Paste the credential at the hidden prompt. Then start codex from that terminal. This avoids putting the credential in the command itself or in the shared configuration file. A secret manager can supply the same environment variable.
The variable must be available to the process running Codex. A desktop app launched elsewhere may not inherit your terminal’s environment; follow its environment setup instructions and restart it when necessary. Do not paste the credential into the AI conversation.
Make the first request
Use codex mcp list to inspect the configured server. Inside the Codex CLI, /mcp shows MCP information. Ask:
Read the website and summarize its pages, design, and granted access. Suggest one useful draft improvement. Do not change or publish anything yet.
In Studio, choose Check result. A configured server is not evidence of a successful request. Check the connection state and, if needed, troubleshooting.
A read-only credential is enough for this task. For editing, create a credential with Edit drafts or Edit and publish and follow the review and apply flow.
This guide uses Codex’s documented bearer configuration. It does not promise support for every Codex version, account plan or hosting arrangement.
